Allen-Edmonds© uses a stitched welt construction in handcrafting our fine footwear. The welt is the leather piece that binds together the upper, the insole and the outsole. In an Allen-Edmonds© shoe, all the layers are stitched together with a single welt that runs 360 degrees around the shoe. This unity of construction eliminates the need for the nails and stiff metal shanks that hold together most ordinary shoes. As a result, Allen-Edmonds© shoes are more durable and flexible, not to mention more comfortable. Welt shoemaking is something of a lost art. Quite frankly, 360 degree welting is unique. Allen-Edmonds© believes, however, that you can't handcraft quality footwear by cutting corners. That's why one-piece 360 degree welt construction has been a tradition of ours since 1922. Allen-Edmonds© buyers search markets throughout the world for the finest calfskins and exotic leathers available. They hand sort calfskin hides from European tanneries, checking each skin to see that it is smooth, fine-grained and free of unsightly blemishes. Only when a hide is deemed prime quality is the leather accepted. At the Wisconsin manufacturing plants, where we handcraft our footwear, the leather is inspected again during the cutting process for any sign of imperfection. Skilled artisans cut a pair of shoes from the same skin, so there is no variation in the appearance, feel or fit. |
